The Joy of Obedience

“Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them and we will come to them and make our home with them.’” (John 14:23)

Jesus says here that anyone who loves Him will obey His teaching. He isn’t just suggesting we begrudgingly follow a set of rules or statutes. He’s saying that the God who created the universe would make His home IN us. He doesn’t want us to follow rules – He wants our hearts to be connected to His. Once we see it this way it changes everything in how we approach spending time with God in His Word.

It’s easy to pick and choose the parts of the Bible we will obey based on what we like or don’t like. To fight this urge, every time we open up the Word of God, we must pre-determine that we will obey what it says. When we do this, we align our hearts with His purpose and invite Him to transform us into who He’s created us to be.

We don’t walk under a weight of obedience but rather have the incredible privilege to experience the life He’s meant for us to live. When we allow God to order our steps by obeying His Word, we experience His presence and hear His voice at whole new level.  This is the joy that comes from loving Jesus and obeying His teaching!

Prayer:  Jesus, thank You for coming to make Your home in me. Help me to be quick to obey Your teaching as you order my steps. Align my heart and mind to Your purpose for me today.  Amen.
