“And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35)
Did you know that God created us to receive through giving? You probably remember what Christmas and birthdays were like when you were younger. We all wanted the most gifts in our pile complete with the latest, greatest toys and enough candy to make you sick. But as you mature you start to see the joy in giving. It becomes more fun to watch someone else open the gift you put so much thought into. When you’re a parent, the joy comes from seeing your kids receive.
It’s that same kind of joy you get from blessing someone who can’t do anything for you in return. When Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” He wasn’t just trying to bend cultural norms or say something unexpected. It’s how our hearts are wired! It’s how we were created to live – giving to others out of the abundance of blessings we’ve been given. When we trust God with what we’ve been given by giving it back to Him we become His image-bearers and show others His radical love.
God wants to bless you – this doesn’t mean He’s writing you a blank check – it’s actually even better than that. Being a good steward means learning to enjoy what God enjoys – the joy, life and encouragement that comes from viewing life through, “How can I be a blessing?” more than “How can I be blessed?”
Prayer: Lord, You are the Giver of all. Help me to remember that I am more blessed out of my giving. Enable me to show others Your love and character through radical generosity. Amen.
