“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
America is the land of opportunity, where anyone who’s willing to work hard can have whatever they want…if they want it bad enough. They can work, climb, scratch & claw their way to the top. This is “the American dream.” We pull ourselves up by our boot-straps. We do whatever it takes to get the job done. We work hard for our money…and we deserve to enjoy ourselves.
There’s only one problem – it’s not what the Bible says. Living like this will eat away at your soul and one day you look up and wonder what happened. Money and success can’t fill up your heart. We aren’t self-made men and women. We are children of God and everything we have is given to us from our Father.
What are we seeking on a daily basis? Success? Financial security? College funds? A bigger house? A better job? A nicer car? None of these things are inherently bad, but Jesus said that isn’t what we should be seeking first. If we seek ourselves and build our own kingdom where we rule, the walls will eventually crumble, and amongst the ruins the treasures we thought we had built up will disappear. Jesus tells us to seek first God’s Kingdom and His righteousness and the rest will be added in. Every good thing in our life is a gift, not a result of our own success. It is a beautiful demonstration of His love and generosity.
Prayer: God, Your Kingdom reigns above all. Every gift and blessing I have comes from You. When I am tempted to build my own kingdom, help me to seek Yours only. Amen.
