“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. (Proverbs 4:25-26)
If you’ve ever taken a hike in a heavily wooded area, you know that finding the path (and staying on it) is of utmost importance. If you get distracted looking at the wildlife or are busy chatting with a friend, before you know it you may very well end up lost and in need of a search and rescue team. There’s a reason a path has been created – to lead you through the journey to your destination on the other side.
Part of being a disciple of Christ is having the diligence and discipline to stay on the path God has laid out for us– and that takes a good dose of wisdom when opportunities and temptations come up for us stray off course. In this passage we are instructed to keep our eyes forward and our gaze straight ahead of us. If we keep our eyes on Jesus rather than our circumstances and what’s going on around us, we are able to continue to make progress on the course He’s set before us. Otherwise, distractions can lead us to stumble off course.
The book of Proverbs is a great place to start if you are looking to increase in the wisdom God freely offers. As we ponder the path, study and keep His Word, and commit to guarding our hearts, our footing becomes more sure with every step and we grow in the righteousness of Christ. Don’t let anything steal your gaze off the Savior and He’ll make straight your paths.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for your wisdom and the way You illuminate and protect our path. Help me to keep my eyes on You and nowhere else as I journey through today’s circumstances. Amen.
