Breath of God’s Word

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

Statistics show that Americans like the idea of reading the Bible much more than they actually like to read it. Biblical literacy continues to plummet in our country despite the fact that 88 percent of Americans own at least one Bible. It’s one thing to say you value the Bible – it’s something very different to have your life shaped and transformed by God’s Word.

When Paul says that Scripture is “God-breathed” he is saying that the words the authors used–to the tiniest detail–are divinely inspired or “breathed” by God. This miraculous revelation didn’t just inspire thoughts or ideas but the very words written on the page. The Bible is, from beginning to end, about the good news that our King Jesus Christ is coming to redeem and restore all of creation to the glory of God. He’s the hero of the story!

When we allow God’s perfect Word to infiltrate our thoughts and settle on our hearts, we make room for the Him to move powerfully in our lives. He wants to speak to us—and He wrote His message in the words of Scripture. When we study the Bible we grow, mature and are trained so that we are “thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Prayer: God, thank You for the gift of Your Word. Use it to train and teach me so that I may be an instrument for Your purposes today. Amen.
